21:00 CONCERT withMIKE BLOCK
𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 is a pioneering cellist, singer, songwriter, and educator with a passion for intercultural collaboration through music. Hailed by the New York Times for his "solo interpretive vibrancy and richness," and by the Salt Lake City Desert News as "a true artist...a sight to behold," Mike Block "is one of the world's most fearless musicians. and intrigues of the American fusion scene" (Gramophone). Mike's performances offer a rich mix of classical repertoire, folk music, original compositions and songs. Since 2005, Mike has been a member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, with whom he has performed as soloist on cello and vocals, contributed arrangements and compositions, and won a Grammy Award in 2017 for his album Sing Me Home.
Mike is part of the first generation of cellists to adopt a strap to stay upright and move around while performing. To do this, he uses a strap designed by himself: The Block Strap. Mike was the first cellist to perform “standing up” at Carnegie Hall, a performance the New York Times characterized as "breathless... half dance, half defiance."
In 2020, Mike founded Play For The Vote, hosting musical performances at polling stations across the country on Election Day, with the goal of increasing voter participation by providing a more positive voting experience. As an educator, he is the founder/director of two summer programs: the Mike Block String Camp, as well as Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop. Mike teaches online through his Multi-Style Cello School inartistworks.com, and is on the faculty of the New England Conservatory.
